When designing the PA621 series, our primary engineering challenge was solving the thermal-mechanical coupling problem unique to vehicle-mounted solar panels. On an RV rooftop, the panel simultaneously faces two destructive forces: sustained heat transfer from the sun-baked roof surface below, and continuous mechanical stress from road-induced vibration.

Conventional flexible panels use a single-layer polymer backsheet (typically PET or TPT) with thermal conductivity around 0.15–0.25 W/(m·K). While this provides basic weather protection, it offers no meaningful thermal barrier when mounted directly on a metal roof that can reach 70–80°C in summer.

For the PA621, we developed a fiberglass-reinforced composite backsheet with a measured thermal conductivity of 0.2 W/(m·K) — but critically, with a significantly greater thickness and multi-layer structure that creates effective thermal resistance far superior to conventional single-layer designs.

The fiberglass reinforcement serves a dual purpose: it increases bending strength to ≥20 MPa (versus ~8–12 MPa for standard flexible panels), and it distributes vibration stress across a wider area, preventing the stress concentration points that cause micro-cracks in cell interconnects.

Key finding: In controlled testing (IEC 61215 conditions, 1000W/m² irradiance, 35°C ambient), PA621 cells operated at 5°C lower than identical cells with a standard PET backsheet on the same metal substrate.
